Emulators have had an interesting history on the App Store, to say the least. There are a few emulator apps that have received Apple’s blessing, namely Manomio’s Commodore 64 [$4.99] and a choice group of similar emulators. More often than not though, they randomly appear, having slipped through the Apple approval system, then are quickly pulled. Right now we’ve got no clue which side of the fence iMAME [Free] is sitting on, but it’s free, so there’s absolutely no reason not to download it just to have it.

iMame comes preloaded with nine less than stellar ROMs to play, but the real interesting part is going to be whether or not it’s possible to side load other ROM files into the app. I’ve been tinkering around with various tricks to load other ROMs into the app that have worked in other instances of similar emulators on to the App Store, and so far haven’t had anything work. Regardless, I give it about two hours (or potentially much less) before someone figures it out, and a few hours after that for Apple to pull it from the App Store.

Go go go!!! I’ll keep this post updated as new things develop.

Update: It seems that the same method used to get games into iDOS also works in iMAME. Twitter user @mattlukens mentions, “Yep, add a .zip rom to the Docs folder through PhoneView and it works perfect! Just tried Crime Fighters!” He also provided a screenshot. The clock is really ticking now on Apple pulling this down.

Update: iMAME supports the iCade.

A brief googling reveals that there are various softwares that can do this, but as far as I know none that one can use on a Mac and is easily obtainable is free. A free and easy way to make not just djvu-to-pdf conversion but much more is to use DocsPal, which is a free web-based service:

The site is self-explanatory: just upload your djvu file (it will probably recognise the file type automatically), choose the output format, and hit “convert.” The file gets converted and a link to it appears.

One drawback is that when one converts a djvu file to pdf, the file size gets significantly larger. I believe this is a general problem about these formats, not a shortcoming on DocsPal’s part (but I might be mistaken: this problem is mentioned in many discussion threads online). One way of remedying this to reduce the file size using Acrobat (open the converted pdf file, select Document > Reduce File Size… and follow the instruction), but this does not usually make it as light as the original djvu file (this depends of course on the nature of the data embedded in the file).

The United Nations declared a famine in parts of southern Somalia, calling for a widespread international response to end the suffering.

Thousands of Somalis have been fleeing the country each week in search of food, water and shelter — many of them walking for days in the sweltering sun toward refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Nearly half a million children are at risk of dying from malnutrition and disease.

Relief organizations are calling on the international community to join together to end the crisis, and they’re working to gain entrance into areas with limited humanitarian access.

Like many people out there living on the Macintosh, I’ve spent the best part of this evening backing up, installing and downloading files, all to upgrade my machines to the latest and greatest from Cupertino, CA – OS X Lion. I’ve got a pretty epic Evernote listing all the software I need to reload, but one absentee from the default install is the Java platform. As a Java dev, this is one of the first points I’ve looked to address.

Installing Java on OS X Lion is actually really easy, but for some reason starting the process is not very obvious.

Java is installed by the Software Update program, however to launch the process you’ll need to open a Terminal window and type:

$ java

Software Update will take it from there. Seems so odd, the pairing of Terminal and Software Update, probably the least and most friendly parts of the Mac OS.

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion hides the ~/Library directory by default. This is easy to reverse and show Library all the time with a terminal command:

chflags nohidden ~/Library/

But for most users that simply isn’t necessary because they won’t be accessing the Library directory enough to make it worthwhile.

For quick and temporary access to your ~/Library/ directory that still retains it’s default hidden nature, try one of the following three tips:

There are already tools to convert PDFs to ebooks like Calibre, but what they do is that they try to guess the role of each piece of text in the PDF (and that’s if you’re lucky). I think that in all but the simplest cases, it’s a mistake to think that anything short of an AI can do that kind of guessing.

Enter PdfMasher. PdfMasher asks the user about the role of each piece of text, and does it in an efficient manner. Your PDF has a header on each page and you don’t want them to litter your text? Sort text elements by Y-position (thus grouping them all together), shift select the elements and flag them as ignored. They will not appear on your final HTML. Your PDF has footnotes on many pages? Sort your elements by text content (thus grouping all elements with the text starting with a number together) and flag them as footnotes. They will be moved to the end of the document, and PdfMasher will try to create hyperlinks to footnote references.
